How does the Berryburst slot work?
One of the biggest differences from the Starburst slot is that Berryburst has no paylines. You win when you have a group of at least five of the same symbols lined up. NetEnt previously put this mechanism – with success – into slots like Twin Spin Deluxe and Aloha! Cluster Pays.
There are seven different symbols that will win you a prize. You win from a cluster of five. Identical symbols that are vertically or horizontally adjacent form a cluster. Diagonal does not count. The largest cluster is 15 pieces, then you have a screen full of the same symbol.
You play with 10 credits per spin. The value of a credit you set yourself and ranges from C$ 0.01 to C$ 2. The bet level is the factor. Bet level 10 means that you bet 10 times as much and therefore also get a 10 times higher prize.
The three playing card symbols earn the least. Five hearts, spades or diamonds in a cluster means 5 credits. A cluster of 15 will earn you 1,000 credits. Are you playing with bet level 10? Then you can do the prices times 10.
It becomes more lucrative when you spin clusters of fruit symbols. There are raspberries, tangerines, limes and blueberries involved. And oh, how they look fresh. The top prize is not won by the blueberries, but by the raspberry. Fifteen times this raspberry will earn you 5,000 credits. That's a maximum of C$ 100,000.
So what's new about Berry Burst?
First of all, the theme is no longer science fiction, but fruit is the main subject. And what do those fruit symbols look like to eat, say! Also noteworthy is that there are no winning lines, but the cluster pays mechanism is active.
Furthermore, Berry Burst allows you to spin no less than 5 reels of wilds, instead of the maximum 3 reels of wilds in Starburst. The maximum win is also significantly increased: in Berry Burst it is possible to win 1,000 times your bet. If you have played the maximum bet, then you can win C$200,000. And that's even above all the payouts you'll grab leading up to the 5 wilds.
In terms of variance, Berry Burst is a lot more attractive than Starburst, which had a very low variance. So Berry Burst seems to be aimed a bit more at the more serious gambler, where Starburst was aimed at the novice player.
Wild Respins
Berryburst doesn't have a bonus game, but it does have a feature with Wild Respins. You have a Wild Respin up your sleeve when you spin a Wild symbol. The Wild symbol will expand. That gives you a Wild Reel.
Next you get the respin. Do you play a Wild symbol again? Then this Wild symbol also folds out. After that you get another respin. The previously spun Wild Reels will remain in place. This continues as long as you spin Wild symbols.
This can be done up to five times, because there are five reels and Wild symbols can appear on all five reels.
The maximum win is when you spin a combination of Wild symbols and raspberries only six times. It's possible, but that chance is of course very small. Still, the respins sometimes yield nice prizes. Especially if you manage to win several in a row.
What do we think of the Berry Burst slot machine?
Netent has taken a big gamble with Berry Burst that, as far as we're concerned, works out very well. Starburst was always a slot with way too low variance for us and Berry Burst jumps nicely into that gap. Not only does this slot look particularly nice, you can win some nice money as well. We expect Berry Burst to be a big hit for Netent. 4 out of 5 stars.
